The Zale “Light of Peace” Diamond

In 1969, the Zale Corp. of Dallas purchased. in Antwerp, a fine blue-white gem, weighing 434.6 carats, classified as a Type 11a, which originally came from Sierra Leone. This diamond was eventually cut into several, smaller stones, the largest and most beautiful of which was a “pear-shaped” cut, with 111 facets, weighing 130.27 carats, and was given the name “Light of Peace”. This diamond has an almost ethereal beauty, and is virtually incomparable in its depth.

The “Light of Peace” is the 14th largest diamond in the world.

This stone has a D-colour, and VVSI clarity, and is graded as “saturated” - one of the words, such as “fancy” and “vivid” - which relate directly to the quality and depth of any diamond. Two brothers were the founders of the Zale Corp., and they decided to use it to make a small contribution to promoting peace, believing that it was time for private industry to take a more active role.

In 1980, these brothers decided to put the diamond up for sale, having received many inquiries over the years, and they eventually sold it for SIX MILLIONS DOLLARS to an undisclosed buyer. Its current location is not known, but being of such incomparable beauty, it is most likely stashed in a large, very safe, very secret bank vault.
